What is IPTV (Internet Protocol television)

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is a digital television broadcasting technology that delivers TV content over the internet rather than traditional cable or satellite formats. Instead of being transmitted via terrestrial, satellite, or cable TV formats, IPTV streams content directly to devices through an internet connection.
An IPTV service, usually provided by a service provider, streams live television and on-demand video content over IP networks.

How does Internet Protocol television work?

  1. Signal Conversion:

    • Traditional TV signals (analog or digital) are captured and converted into IP-compatible signals.

    • The content is sent from the headend to users via the internet. CDNs and Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms ensure minimal buffering and high-quality playback.

  4. Decoding and Playback:

    • The set-top box, smart TV, or app receives the streamed data packets, decodes them, and displays the content to the user.

  5. Interactivity:

    • IPTV supports interactive features like pausing live TV, video on demand (VoD), and program guides. Users can request specific content, which the system delivers in real time.

Types of IPTV Services

  1. Live Television: Streaming live TV channels over the internet.
  2. Video on Demand (VoD): Allowing users to choose and watch movies, shows, or other content at any time.
  3. Time-Shifted TV: Enabling users to watch programs after they’ve aired, such as catch-up TV or start-over features.
